National Pan-Hellenic Council designates September as voter registration month

NPHC  plans voter registration drive during JSU game on September 29th

JANS – In an effort to further its purpose of unity and its mission of service to the community, the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) has asked all of its chapters across the nation to hold Voter Registration/Education initiatives in their communities. The NPHC is composed of nine (9) Greek letter sororities and fraternities: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. NPHC member organizations in Mississippi have joined together with the NAACP to implement several statewide voter registration drives.

During the month of September, the more than 200 chapters will conduct individual drives in communities, but will join together to conduct drives at college football games: September 1st-Mississippi Valley State University; September 29th Jackson State University and Alcorn State University. Other NPHC voter registration drives will be held at Edgewater Mall on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Rust College in Holly Springs and at Coahoma Community College. During the past several months, the Metro Jackson chapter of the NPHC convened state leaders from all NPHC organizations to organize these voter registration efforts, rallying around the theme: “Together We Can Do MORE-Mobilize, Organize Revitalize, Energize”.

While the individual chapter efforts target local neighborhoods and communities, together, these organizations will champion the cause and a statewide platform to encourage civic participation and emphasize the importance of getting registered to vote and then exercising the right to vote. These groups will carry the message that every aspect of our lives is shaped by our participation at the ballot box. Volunteer members of the NPHC, and the NAACP , in addition to the Student Government Association, will be available in the tailgate area before the game and in the stadium during the game on Saturday, September 29th (beginning at 2:00 p.m.)with voter registration applications and other information to assist anyone to register to vote. These members will be wearing their sorority and fraternity paraphernalia and will be easily recognizable with the goal of getting people registered to vote.

During the month of October these groups will also host Voter Education Forums to assist in educating the public on issues regarding Voter ID, health and education initiatives. The NPHC groups of Mississippi will be sharing the message that all individuals must have a sense of responsibility to one’s community in order to improve conditions in our towns, cities and our state. This can be done by registering to vote and voting. Together, We Can Do MORE! For more information or if you know someone who needs to register to vote, contact: Mr. Will Jemison at 601-291-2462.
