Alex Haley, student of Alcorn State

One of America’s most renowned authors, Alex Haley, attended Alcorn State University. He enrolled at the age of 15 and remained two years before returning home to Henning, TN. His father, surely disappointed, felt that Alex needed discipline and growth and convinced him to enlist in the military when he turned 18. On May 24, 1939, Alex Haley began his twenty-year enlistment with the Coast Guard, and of course went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Roots, The Saga of an American Family. Haley also wrote for Playboy and became senior editor of Readers Digest. Other credits are The Autobiography of Malcolm X and the screenplay for Super Fly TNT.
