Matt Thomas: ASU’s #1 fan

JANS –- If Alcorn State University had a #1 fan award it would go to Matthew “Matt” W. Thomas, Jr., a 1964 graduate. Thomas graduated with honors in business administration. He later received a Certificate of Health Administration from Vanderbilt University and a Certificate of College and University Administration from Tuskegee Institute. He served with distinction as president of the Alcorn State University National Alumni Association from 1986-90, and for several years served as Chair of the ASU Foundation. In 1991, Thomas was selected as ASU Alumnus of the Year and received the 2010 Alumnus of the Year from Alcorn State University’s Department of Business, honors he cherishes. Since 1970, Thomas has served as president of Statewide General Insurance Agency, Inc., in Jackson, MS.   Other business undertakings include: Executive Director, Madison-Yazoo-Leake Family Health Center 1972-1976; Comptroller, Mississippi Action for Progress, Inc. and Accountant, Tuskegee Institute. Besides his affiliation with Alcorn State University, Thomas has served as chairperson, Jackson-Hinds Public Library Board; Chairperson; Chaired Southeastern Region of Small Business under President Jimmy Carter; served on  the United States Small Business Commission; received Black Businessman of the Year in 1987; served as an expert witness for law firms; Jackson Redevelopment Authority’s Board of Commissioners, representing Ward 2, sworn in August 27, 2008, term expires August 13, 2014, serves as Chairman, Project Committee; a member of Finance Committee and Personnel Committee. He is married to Francine, father of three children and a member of Farish Street Baptist Church where he serves in several capacities.
