MHS in the audience at State of the Union Address
JANS – Justis Gibbs, president of the sophomore class at Murrah High, was in the audience for the joint session of Congress on January 24, 2012, when President Barack Obama delivered his State of the Union address. Gibbs and his sister, Ariana, a junior at Spelman College and a 2009 Murrah High graduate, and their mother, Debra Gibbs, were in the audience as guests of Congressman Bennie Thompson, Congressman Gregg Harper, and Senator Thad Cochran. Justis Gibbs is interested in government, history, and speech and has won several oratorical awards. President Obama’s State of the Union speeches have drawn from 42-52 million television viewers since 2009. “It was a once in a lifetime experience,” said Justis Gibbs, who hopes that it won’t be his last time attending a State of the Union Address.
