JSU Tigers Lose Regular Season Finale 7-3 to Norfolk State

JSU-logoNORFOLK, Va. – The Jackson State Tigers baseball team fell 7-3 to the Norfolk State Spartans Friday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field. In their final game of the regular season, the Tigers had 10 hits and three RBIs. Norfolk State scored its seven runs on nine hits and had six RBIs.

The Tigers (30-23) were led offensively by shortstop Gary Thomas who was a perfect 5-5 at the plate. Five other Tigers recorded one hit each. NSU (26-14) took the series, splitting the day one twin bill with JSU before taking today’s game.

Trailing 1-0 after the second inning, JSU scored a pair of runs in the top of the third inning to briefly take a 2-1 advantage. Melvin Rodriguez tripled to get on base and scored on a Jovany Felipe RBI single. Felipe then scored on a Jesus Santana RBI single. The Spartans reclaimed the lead, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to make the score 3-2.

NSU added a run in the sixth and another three in the seventh. Tilur Smith scored JSU’s final run on a Lamar Briggs RBI single in the eighth inning.

Alexander Juday (5-6) pitched 5.2 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits, to suffer the loss. He also recorded a game-high eight strikeouts.

The Tigers return to action Wednesday, May 13 to participate in the first round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament.
