NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Jackson State baseball team entered the first day of the 2015 Southwestern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament with an 8-0 record in the event over the last two years, but the Tigers were not able to continue their streak Wednesday morning at Wesley Barrow Stadium. The Tigers fell 10-5 to the Southern University Jaguars.

The No. 3 seeded JSU Tigers (30-24) swept the regular season series against the No. 2 seeded Jaguars, who improved to an 18-22 overall record. The Jaguars outhit the Tigers 15-6 en route to the win. Alexander Juday (6-6) got the loss. In 5.1 innings of work he allowed seven runs on eight hits while striking out a pair of batters. J’Marcus George (3-4) pitched eight innings to get the win. He allowed six runs on five hits while striking out 10 batters.

Senior first baseman Tilur Smith led the Tigers offense, going 2-3 with two runs scored. Melvin Rodriguez, the SWAC Player of the Year, recorded a hit and a RBI. Three other Tigers recorded a hit.

Trailing 3-0 after four innings, JSU scored its first run when Smith scored on a Dylan Parker sacrifice. The Jags scored a run in the bottom of the fifth. JSU scored its second run of the game in the sixth when Gary Thomas scored on a Rodriguez double. The Jags countered with three runs at the bottom of the sixth.

JSU’s final three runs came in the seventh inning. Smith, Jaylen Bledsoe and Bryce Brown each scored a run.

The Tigers, who remain in the hunt for their third straight SWAC title, return to action Thursday at 9 a.m. to play the loser of the Alabama State (No. 1) vs. Prairie View A&M (No. 4) game.
